2011 was one of the best years in the history of Coritiba Foot Ball Club. Coxa stepped into the spotlight and was recognized internationally as the Most Victorious Team in the World. That is because Coxa won a record 24 consecutive matches, confirmed by Guinness World Records.
Thus, Coritiba is officially the team with the longest streak of wins in the world. “We attained an impressive mark; we certainly must laud these 24 consecutive wins. It is something never before achieved and will certainly be difficult to break. And now it has been confirmed by Guinness World Records, an institution with veritable global respect. Our fans have much to celebrate and Brazil can be proud of this milestone”, affirmed the club president, Vilson Ribeiro de Andrade.
And to prove the fact, Coritiba conducted surveys on which other clubs could have the same run. In first place was Nacional, from Uruguay, with a more expressive run, 32 wins, between 1940 and 1942. There are also another four clubs: Benfica (Portugal, 1971-73) with 29, Brisbane (Australia, 2010-to present), Al Faysali (Jordan, 2001-2002) and Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia, 2007-08) with 28 and Celtic (Scotland, 2003-04) with 25.
These data appeared on the internet, but were soon demystified. However, the milestone cited did not consider an uninterrupted sequence, rather games in the same competition, ignoring defeats and draws in other tournaments. Thus, Coxa's 24 matches are notably the longest sequence in the world. And as such, Coxa complied with the necessary criteria for approval of the record.
In Brazil, since the 1996 season, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras held a record of 21 consecutive wins in all competitions, this becoming the target for Coritiba. At the end of April, Coritiba beat Caxias-RS by 1 x 0, overtaking the mark of the São Paulo-based club. Two matches later, coincidently against Palmeiras, the club established a new record: 24 consecutive victories in all competitions.
During the matches won, Coritiba scored 74 goals, conceding only 16, initiating and ending the sequence with a rain of goals. The first was against Iraty, on February 3, with a 5 x 0 win. And the last was against Palmeiras, on May 5, with a final score of 6 x 0. The matches were played in the Paraná State Championship and Brazil Cup, something that focused the spotlight on Coxa in the domestic scenario. And, more than ever, it welcomed the support of its dedicated fans, leading to the number of club members increasing.
In total, 230,452 people visited the stadiums to watch Coritiba attain this feat. The supporters, known as Alviverdes, or Green and Whites, pushed the players on, celebrating every goal and proudly cheering their winning team.
It was thus that Coritiba became a world record holder recognized by Guinness as follows: ““The most consecutive association football victories across all competitions was 24 by Coritiba Foot Ball Club (Brazil) from Curitiba, Brazil, between 3 February and 5 May 2011. The team outscored opponents 74-16 in winning 17 matches in the Parana State Championship and seven matches in the national cup competition”.
In the history of the Club, the previous record was from the 1939 team with 10 straight wins. In 1961, the totaled 17 games without a loss and between 1947 and 1948, managed 11 consecutive wins in the Paraná Championship.
